FAQ's

My Skylight looks dirty, can I clean it? if so what should I use?

For most skylight glass, use:

  • Warm water with a small amount of mild dishwashing liquid
  • A microfibre cloth or soft sponge
  • Rinse with clean water and dry with a clean microfibre cloth or squeegee

Avoid abrasive pads, cream cleansers, strong solvents, bleach, or ammonia-heavy cleaners. They can damage coatings, acrylic domes, seals, and powder-coated frames.

For an acrylic/polycarbonate dome skylight, stick to mild soapy water only. Glass cleaner and other chemicals can cause clouding or fine cracking over time. Importantly, they can also cause Chemical Degradatio.

Can I clean the outside of my skylight?

Cleaning the outside of a skylight can be difficult and may involve working at heights. We do not recommend climbing onto a roof unless you are trained, suitably equipped and able to do so safely. Otherwise, use a qualified tradesperson.

For external cleaning, use the same gentle cleaning method recommended above: mild soapy water, a soft cloth or sponge, and clean water for rinsing.

Skydome Hunter Coast also provides professional skylight cleaning and inspection services.

What is included in a skylight maintenance service?

A skylight maintenance service is designed to help keep your skylight watertight, clean and working properly.

Our service includes inspection of the dome or glass, seals, sealants, flashings and water drainage points. We identify wear, deterioration or potential leaks and carry out suitable treatments or recommend repairs where required.

Regular maintenance can help extend the life of your skylight and reduce the risk of water ingress or preventable damage.

Do skylights leak?

A properly installed and well-maintained skylight do not leak.

Most skylight leaks are caused by ageing seals or sealants, damaged flashings, blocked drainage points, roof deterioration, or incorrect installation. In some cases, condensation can also be mistaken for a leak.

Regular inspections and maintenance help identify these issues early. If you notice water marks, dripping, mould, or discolouration around your skylight, it is best to have it inspected before further damage occurs.

What is Flashing kit and do I need one?

Flashing is the weatherproof material fitted around the outside of a skylight where it meets the roof.

Its job is to direct rainwater away from the skylight opening and onto the roof, helping prevent water from getting under the roofing material and into the ceiling space.

Skylight flashing is usually made from metal and is shaped to suit the roof type, such as tiled, metal or low-pitch roofing. Correct flashing installation is one of the most important parts of keeping a skylight watertight.

Where do I get Flashing from?

Skydome Hunter Coast includes the appropriate flashing in your skylight quote.

Flashing is one of the most important parts of a skylight installation, as it directs water safely around the skylight. While some skylight components can be replaced later if required, replacing flashing after installation can be a major and costly exercise.

We use our own proven flashing system as it is industry leading across all skylight brands, designed to suit your roof type and provide long-term weather protection.
